Residents are encouraged to nominate deserving citizens in the region’s annual Australia Day Awards with submissions opening on Monday (25 October).

Mayor of the Mid-Western Region, Des Kennedy called on residents to take a few minutes to nominate a friend, family member or colleague who volunteers, is involved in sport or the arts, or has significantly contributed to their community.

“2021 has been another tough year for many people in our region and I know there are countless residents who’ve dug deep to help their community,” Cr Kennedy said.

“If you’ve noticed the service of someone this year, why not consider taking just a few moments to nominate them and shine a light on their achievements.”

There are six categories in which to nominate including Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year.

The 2021 dual Citizens of the Year, Dr Alex Ghanem and Dr Gary Moore were recognised for their role in the establishment of the Mudgee Respiratory and Fever Clinic during the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

“Alex and Gary are perfect examples of what it means to be Citizen of the Year,” Cr Kennedy said.

“They took on a project that was outside of their day to day roles for the protection and safety of our community. The clinic has been a major success testing for COVID-19 in our community and in recent months has expanded administering COVID-19 vaccinations with thousands of residents having had their jabs at the showground.”

Nominees must be Australian citizens and must reside within the Mid-Western Regional Council area. Nominations close on 22 November 2021.

Mid-Western Regional Council’s Australia Day Celebrations will take place at Anzac Park, Gulgong on Australia Day, Wednesday, 26 January 2022.
